Out of all the beautiful scenic views that the state of Arkansas has to offer, this is my favorite of all. With an unobstructed, panoramic view of over 180 degrees, this special place allows you to see over 50 miles of the Arkansas River valley in any direction. There is no hiking required as you are able to park at the point itself so it can be enjoyed by anyone regardless of physical ability. This also has the traditional gravesite of Petit Jean; the young French girl for whom the mountain is named.
Inside Info - This place can be found about 4 miles East of the main Petit Jean park area. You can literally drive to the point itself so this can in no way be considered a hike. There is a viewing podium that is wheelchair accessible so the view can literally be enjoyed by everyone. For the more adventurous, you can leave the safe confines of the main viewing area and go onto the rocks directly overlooking the bluff. A little common sense goes a long way here but keep a close eye on kids and pets if you're in this area. You'll also see the traditional gravesite of the mountain's namesake: Petit Jean. I won't go into the detail of the story surrounding Petit Jean as there is a lot of on-line documentation about it. It is not known if Petit Jean is actually buried at this exact spot but a search in the early part of the last century determined that this is the most likely spot of the grave.
Final Word - Again, this is simply my favorite view in the State of Arkansas. I usually prefer more remote, unpopulated places but this place is a big exception. It can tend to be crowded on good weather days (especially weekends) but by all means, anyone in this area needs to go here at least once. It is completely accessible to anyone so go, stay, and soak it all in.
